10 Ways for Families to Reconnect With Nature

Aug 29

With modern conveniences and entertainment keeping us indoors more than ever, many families have lost a sense of connection to our natural world. Humanity is no longer tied to living life seasonally or according to nature’s cycles as much as we used to be. In many ways, we’re enjoying a higher quality of life than ever before. There’s evidence, however, that staying connected to and enjoying nature is important. Not only does spending time in nature improve our mental well-being, it also contributes to fitness and a stronger immune system.

Here are a few ways you and your family can reconnect with nature and enjoy those benefits.

  1. Going For Walks – The busiest families might feel overwhelmed about trying to spend more time in nature, especially if it requires travel. Walking, however, is a very convenient activity. Just by simply going for a walk regularly, you will get more exercise and fresh air.  Keep it fun by taking turns choosing the routes you take!
  1. Cooking Outdoors – Cooking meals outside is a great way to bring people together. Most people enjoy a barbecue or cooking over a fire. It allows you to spend some time outside relaxing and conversing with your family and friends. Also, everyone will appreciate the effort you put into creating a meal for them. Try giving everyone a special task to share in the dinner prep and cooking, and bonus points if you pretend to be hunter-gatherers.
  1. Hiking – Hiking is an excellent form of exercise. It can help to strengthen your muscles, build your endurance, and is also an great form of cardio. Hiking also allows you to experience nature in a profound way and allows you to view all of the plants and animals of your region. Stop along the trails and take in the sounds and smells of the wildlife. You’ll likely suprise yourself with how much you can notice away from common city noises.
  1. Camping – Camping allows you to fully immerse yourself in nature and connect with a more primitive time. This can help you to forge stronger relationships with your family because it allows you to work together and spend more time in each other’s company.
  1. Swimming – Going for a swim can be refreshing and exciting. It is also a great form of exercise that most people enjoy. If you live near a clean source of water or have access to a pool, this can be a great bonding activity.
  1. Biking – Biking is something most families can enjoy together. It allows you to cover more ground more quickly than walking or running, which opens up the possibility for more sightseeing. It’s a great way to introduce your children to parts of your neighborhood and city that they’ll likely spend time in as they get older and become more independent.
  1. Kayaking Or Rafting – Rafting and kayaking can be exhilarating and a great way to bring people together. It can be relatively inexpensive and will help you build memories too. If whitewater and rapids intimidate you, don’t worry, there are plenty of slow “family friendly” floats that are every bit as fun.
  1. Flying Kites – Kites are super accessible and affordable for almost anyone. Also, you can even build your own, which can save you money and would be a fun activity to share.
  1. Bird watching – Bird watching is becoming a dying art. However, it makes a great hobby and also gives you the opportunity to learn more about the various species and their behaviors, such as migration patterns.
  1. Boating And Skiing – If you have the financial means to take up these hobbies and purchase the equipment, it can become an excellent investment because you will likely get a lot of use out of it. It would allow you to experience the water and have an excellent time on your vacations, afternoons, or weekends.

Reconnecting with nature can help to bring families closer together and is a great activity that has the potential to boost your mood, as well as give you the chance to get some physical activity and fresh air. It can be easy to become caught up in our day-to-day indoor lives, which often includes home activities, working, and shopping. Before you know it, you can go weeks without actually spending time outdoors. Therefore, it is important to think of ways to get outside and spend quality time with the people you care about.
