Be sure to enter the giveaway, and in the meantime, here are five ideas for fixing up your home this fall.
1 – Try a Little Indoor-Outdoor Living
Now that the summer swelter has passed, it’s time get outside and breathe some fresh air. But why waste time going elsewhere, when you can make your own outdoor space more inviting and accessible? A few pieces of patio furniture, a shade structure and some fun planters can easily turn your outdoor space into your own personal park.
If you have a deck or patio that needs some love, sustainable deck tiles are super easy to install, plus they look great and meet our standards for eco-positive living. And it’s a well-known fact that a comfy hammock on a deck is one of the best places to spend a weekend afternoon in autumn.
2 – Add Some Color
Most of the time we focus on our wardrobes, but bringing the fall palette into our interior spaces can be key to really living seasonally. Fall colors are full of warmth and include golden earth tones and rich reds and purples. Decorative textiles or accent pieces like throw pillows and colorful tableware can help you celebrate the seasons through your living spaces.
Maybe you’re super ambitious and want to make some more permanent changes? Painting is one of the easiest ways to change the mood and feel of any interior—even if it’s just a coat of white paint. We like bold-color accent walls for an easy way to make a space pop! And don’t worry, if the romance fades with your accent color, you can re-paint it whenever you want.
3 – Set a Different Mood
Ask a photographer and they’ll tell you lighting is EVERYTHING. Lighting creates the context for how we will see, and consequently feel, inside any space. The low amber-hued light of candles sets a chill vibe for a romantic dinner, slow dancing or quiet conversation. Mid-day natural light has a way of energizing our bodies, making us feel awake and aware.
Inside your home, a mix of lighting sources can help you create different moods for different times and occasions. And this doesn’t have to be complicated. Simply adding a lamp or two to a room (and remembering to turn them on) works wonders to change the way the room feels. Recessed and track lighting are fancier ways to change up your space and (in our opinion) are well worth the investment. And one of the easiest ways to add some new style is with a cool lighting fixture.
A big thing to remember with lighting is to work with what you have, meaning use your windows! Open those shades or blinds during the day and let the sun shine in—it might even lighten your mood.
4 – Wise Up Your Home
Do you live in a smart home? It might be a good time to try out some new technology that can keep your home connected. We’re big fans of products like Nest and ecobee because they help you save energy by making it easier to regulate your home’s thermostat and lights.
From smart fridges, to security cameras and stereos, there are so many options for connected home technology you can enhance just about any home-based activity. (Confession: Our shower fan has a wireless speaker and it’s amazing.) They even make wireless sensors that let you know when your plants need water. Oh hey, Alexa, can you water the plants?
5 – Make a Move
OK, so this technically falls outside of home improvement, but for all the renters out there, maybe it’s time to make the big move—or at least start saving for it? There’s plenty of ways you can fix up your rental, so that you love it, but being your own landlord is definitely a worthwhile experience. Saving is hard though, we get it, and the good news is, there’s a company out there ready and willing to act like your 401K for home buying. Digs, a brand new home savings plan, is launching soon and promises to match you $1 for every $5 in your home savings account. With that kind of support, you’ll be a homeowner in no time. Hello craft-room, kitchen storage, garage brewery, garden space and free parking dreams come true!
